Murphy’s Roofing Supply was built on a simple belief: when you serve people well, everything else follows.
In the early 1970s, Gary Murphy Sr., a Louisiana native relocated to Indiana for a position with a roofing manufacturer. Gary had a strong work ethic but also had an entrepreneurial spirit, recognizing both a need and opportunity to serve contractors in the greater Chicagoland area by opening his own distribution company. In 1977, at just 26 years old, Gary took a leap of faith and opened his first building supply store focused on roofing materials. His goal wasn’t just to sell products, it was to build trust, support customers, and create something that would last.
That foundation still defines Murphy’s Roofing Supply today.
Murphy’s Roofing Supply, a division of the GW Murphy family of businesses, has grown into an independent building materials distributor serving customers across Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. For nearly five decades, we’ve expanded responsibly—staying focused on dependable distribution, operational excellence, and developing the people who make our business possible.

Recover International, a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) launched by the Murphy family, brings people together to accomplish projects that provide safe homes and communities. As construction industry experts, we enable people to get their roofs repaired or replaced, rebuild after natural disasters, and revitalize historically disenfranchised communities.
